Categories

Categories is under Site Features in the left-hand menu. It holds the list of categories you can tag News, Press Releases, Magazine Articles, Events and Documents with.

Categories are how visitors filter a long list down to what they want. It's a setup job you do once and add to occasionally.

Adding a category

  1. Click Categories in the left-hand menu.
  2. Click Create New.
  3. Type the Title — the category name as visitors will see it.
  4. Click Save.

There is no draft. Saving is immediate.

Using them

Categories don't do anything on their own. You assign them when editing a news article, press release, magazine article, event or document — look for the Categories field on that item.

So the order is: create the category first, then tag things with it. If a category isn't in the list when you're editing something, it's because it hasn't been created yet.

How many to have

Fewer than you think. A filter with thirty options is no more useful than no filter at all. Aim for something a visitor could read in one glance.

Renaming

Edit the title and save. Everything tagged with it stays tagged — you're changing the label, not the tagging.

Deleting

Deleting removes the category from everything tagged with it. Nothing else is deleted — items simply lose that tag and drop out of that filter. Check what's using a category before removing it.
